It’s exciting to think that soon you will have fast, reliable, inexpensive internet with your new broadband service, and you are not alone: over 17 million people in the UK have broadband service. But there are a few things you need to check out before that first log-on. While broadband is available in most parts of the UK, not all providers offer service everywhere. To find out which ISPs offer service in your area, do an online availability check or ask your phone or cable company. You can find availability checkers online, often offered by service providers. If you cannot get broadband through your phone, there are other ways, such as via cable, satellite and wireless antenna. Once you have established how you will access broadband, you will need a compatible computer (most computers built after 2000 are likely to be compatible), a special broadband modem or router and, if you are connecting through your phone line, phone adapters.
To check the compatibility of your computer, ask your ISP if they have a list of system specifications. Most do. Even if your computer doesn’t match all of the requirements, speak with them, as often the specifications are actually recommendations. Generally, your PC must have at least 128MB RAM, a CD-ROM drive, 150MB available hard drive, and an operating system that is compatible with the ISP’s router and modem. Apple Mac systems have similar requirements. Once you are ready for broadband, check online for the best deals and ask your provider for all the specific details.
